The History of Brittany

The Breton Kingdom

The Carolingiens, especially Charlemagne, recaptured control of the peninsular from the Franc authority. However, the weight of these military campaigns meant that the emperor Louis had to make a Breton aristocrat (Nominnoe) into a king, in exchange for his loyalty. Nominoe, then his successors, kings Erispe and Salomon, were at the head of the embryonic but real kingdom of Brittany. This kingdom existed until the 9th century, when it disappeared in the war with the Francs and the Viking invasions.
