Ravaged by the Normans, Brittany became a dukedom in the 10th century. It came under English domination from 1166 to 1213, then became a territory of the King of France until the Brittany succession war (1341-1364), which devastated the dukedom. Duke Jean IV (1364-1399) was neutral in the Franco-English conflict.
