The History of Brittany

The end of Breton independence

In 1488, the small Breton army was beaten by the royal army of Saint-Aubin du Cormier. Duchess Anne succeeded her father, without having the means to retain the dukedom’s independence. Rennes was put under siege until she agreed to marry the king of France Charles XIII, and when he died, his cousin, Louis XII.

Her daughter Claude married Francois I and brought him Brittany in her dowry. In 1532, the perpetual union of France and Brittany was sealed.
