Brittany has a special feel to it, a unique character compared to other French regions. In olden days it was in fact independent of France, and protected its identity behind a language and culture all of its own. Of Celtic origin, the Bretons continue to cultivate their traditions and legends to this day. Its a diverse little country, right on the edge of Europe, next to the ocean. This diversity stems from the first Celts, who lived in harmony in different tribes, each with their own ways and traditions; they only formed a united group quite late on. As you weave your way in and out of the different towns and villages in Brittany, youll find that each has its own customs and specific legends.
The little houses that are so typical of Brittany are usually white with coloured shutters, but youll also see plain stone walled houses, and even pink granite with slate or thatched roofs depending on the area.

The way of life, the celebrations and traditions are surprisingly different depending on whether the village is a fishing port or an inland farming hamlet. The bourgeois towns provide yet another ambience. The poorest village still considers itself rich in fascinating legends.
Follow the traces of the knights, as they seek the Holy Grail in the deep Brocéliande forest, try to find Merlins tomb, the Barenton fountain, or Viviane, the Queen of Fairies. Follow living legends, the sailors and fishermen who always have a great tale to tell. Visit islands so numerous that there is one for each day of the year, its a real world apart.
Whichever route you take, your trip to Brittany will enchant you with its richness and memories.
