Vitré
Vitre may be a small town, but it was of great importance for Brittany some centuries ago. It was one of the most important Marches (defensive towns) in Brittany, on the frontier with France when the two were divided. Built on the top of a rocky outcrop, this town is a pleasure for todays visitor thanks to its narrow medieval streets. The towers and fortifications leave you in awe.
Although the town dates from ancient times (the first stones were laid in the 11th century!), the Roman and Gothic style houses are still inhabited to this day. |

The most illustrious belonged originally to textile merchants at the time when silk and linen were major exports in Europe. Lose yourself in this treasure-trove of ancient architecture. Then take a stroll round the ramparts to admire the view of the setting sun. At night, the town takes on a totally different allure, with superb illumination of the fortifications.
